The clear top layer that takes scratches, scuffs and claws. It decides how long the floor looks new, not how thick it feels. 12 mil suits bedrooms, offices and rentals; 20 mil is the commercial spec for kitchens, hallways and pets.
Total plank thickness, attached pad included. A thicker plank feels more solid, sounds less hollow and bridges small subfloor dips better. It does not change scratch resistance: that is the wear layer.
Plank width. Wider planks mean fewer seams across the floor and a calmer room that reads larger; narrower planks look classic and suit small rooms. All our planks are 60 inches long.

This is the floor for the rooms laminate should stay out of: full bathrooms, laundry rooms, mudrooms, kitchens with enthusiastic dishwashers, and whole-house slabs. What SPC vinyl is, layer by layer.
SPC stands for stone polymer composite: limestone and PVC pressed into a rigid board that physically cannot absorb water. Five layers, five jobs, one plank.
- Waterproof through and through: no wood fiber anywhere in the stack, so there is nothing to swell.
- Stable in Sacramento summers: the stone core barely moves with heat, cold, or slab moisture.
- Floats over most floors: click-locks over flat tile, vinyl, or plywood without glue.
- Low maintenance: the sealed surface shrugs off stains; a damp mop is the routine.
Honest note: SPC walks firmer and thinner than our 14 mm laminate. Take a plank of each home and decide in socks.

Laminate vs LVP: which fits your home?
LVP is the water-proof choice: a stone-core plank that shrugs off wet rooms, slabs, and pets with poor aim. It is thinner and denser underfoot than laminate: some people love that firmness, some want the woody feel back. That is what the free planks are for.
- Full baths, laundry, mudrooms: no wood fiber in the core, so there is nothing to swell.
- Concrete slabs: unbothered by seasonal slab moisture that stresses wood-core floors.
- One floor through the whole house: wet rooms included, no transitions needed.
Choose laminate instead if
- You want the hardwood feel: a 14 mm laminate board walks and sounds closest to wood.
- Scratch resistance is the priority: an AC4 laminate surface is very hard to mark.
- Dry rooms: living rooms and bedrooms can go either way.
LVP questions, answered straight.
Is SPC vinyl really waterproof?
The plank is. Its SPC core is limestone and polymer, with no wood fiber that can drink. A flood can still soak drywall and subfloor around any floor, so mop up either way.
12 mil or 20 mil wear layer?
12 mil is fine for bedrooms, rentals and light traffic. 20 mil is the commercial spec: pick it for kitchens, hallways, pets and rolling chairs.
Laminate or LVP for my project?
Rooms with water (baths, laundry, mudroom) take LVP. Dry living areas can go either way: KONO Laminate feels and sounds more like hardwood, LVP is thinner, denser and indifferent to moisture. Ask for a free sample of each.
Do I need underlayment under LVP?
No. The IXPE pad is attached at the factory. A second foam layer underneath adds bounce that stresses the click joint.
