Vinyl plank is fully waterproof and the easiest on the budget. Laminate walks and sounds most like wood and resists scratches best. Engineered hardwood is real oak you can refinish. Each type's own page explains its specs.
Color groups are a guide: undertones shift with daylight and lamps, and one plank can sit in two groups. Pick up a free sample and look at it on your own floor.
Materials per square foot. Installation by our crews in the Sacramento area adds $2.25 (laminate), $2.35 (vinyl plank) or $4.35 (hardwood) per sqft; removal, baseboard and stairs are priced per room.

Which waterproof floor for which room.
Two kinds of floor here, and they handle water differently. Vinyl plank with an SPC core is fully waterproof, so it belongs in full baths, laundry rooms and on slabs. Waterproof laminate handles spills and wet mopping and walks more like wood, which makes it a strong kitchen and entry floor.
Full bathrooms, laundry rooms, mudrooms and basements: vinyl plank. Its stone-polymer core has no wood fiber, so even standing water will not swell it. Kitchens, entries, powder rooms and living areas: either one. Laminate feels warmer and more solid underfoot and resists scratches better; vinyl is quieter about water and costs less.
No floor makes a room waterproof: water that runs under any floor can reach the subfloor, so we seal edges at tubs and showers and leave the expansion gaps the install guides ask for. Installed by our crews, waterproof flooring starts at $4.55 per sqft in the Sacramento area.

Vinyl starts at a lower price per square foot and laminate costs a little more. The bigger difference is how they live: vinyl is untroubled by water and softer underfoot; laminate is harder on top and resists claws and chair legs better. In open plans with a kitchen and living room, many homeowners pick laminate; when the plan includes a full bath or laundry, vinyl.
Both float over the subfloor, so neither is glued to the slab, and both can usually go over existing flat tile. Neither belongs under a fixed kitchen island or cabinets: they need room to move with the seasons.
Waterproof flooring questions, answered straight.
What is the most waterproof flooring?
Vinyl plank with an SPC (stone polymer) core. It has no wood fiber, so standing water does not swell it. Tile is the other fully waterproof option.
Is waterproof laminate as waterproof as vinyl?
No. It resists spills and wet mopping when water is wiped up, but its core is still wood fiber. For full baths and laundry rooms, choose vinyl plank.
Which waterproof flooring looks most like wood?
Laminate, by feel and sound. Both have realistic wood prints; laminate is thicker and more rigid underfoot.
