KONO exists because the flooring trade runs on anonymity: mystery brands, relabeled batches, and installers nobody vouches for. We carry a small range we can actually stand behind, keep it on the ground in our own warehouse, and put our name on the crew’s shirts and on the paperwork. So there is exactly one company to hold responsible for what you buy and how it goes down.
KONO started with a question our founders kept hearing across the counter of another flooring store: “so… who actually makes this?” The honest answer was usually nobody-knows: a broker bought it from an importer who bought it from a trading house, and the same plank wore three different brand names in three different showrooms, at three different prices.
So we built the opposite kind of store. Instead of a catalog with four thousand items nobody has ever walked on, we carry a short range we picked ourselves: 14 mm AC4 laminate with a waterproof core, rigid SPC vinyl with a bonded acoustic pad, and engineered European and red oak. Every collection comes from an established manufacturer whose certificates, spec sheets, and warranty terms we keep on file, and we buy it by the container, so the number on the shelf is a dealer price and not a special order with a markup stacked on top.
The rest of it is unglamorous: a warehouse. We keep 14,300 sqft of flooring on the ground in Sacramento, check every shipment as it lands, and hold a single lot per order, so box 30 matches box 1 and next year’s repair matches both. Homeowners buy a room, property managers buy a building, contractors buy by the pallet, and all three get the same published price list.
Then (and this is the part the industry calls naive) we install it ourselves. W-2 crews, trained on the floor systems we actually stock, working from published prices. When one company picks the range, owns the inventory, and swings the tapping block, a warranty on product and labor stops being marketing and starts being simple accountability: there is exactly one phone number to call.
