Color groups are a guide: undertones shift with daylight and lamps, and one plank can sit in two groups. Pick up a free sample and look at it on your own floor.
European oak is a white oak: calm, tight grain that takes natural, pale and gray finishes evenly. Red oak is warmer, with a pink-tan cast and bold open grain that hides everyday wear. Both are hard, proven flooring woods.
The layer of real oak on top of the board. It sets how many times the floor can be sanded and refinished: about 2 mm allows a light refinish, 3 to 4 mm allows full ones. It is the difference between a floor you keep for decades and one you replace.
Plank width. Wider boards show more grain and make a room calmer; every board we stock is wide plank, 7 inches and up. Lengths are 75 or 87 inches, so rooms take few end joints.
How the boards join. Tongue and groove boards are nailed or glued to the subfloor, the traditional method. Click boards lock together and float over most flat floors, which is faster and goes over concrete without glue.
Materials per square foot. Installation by our crews in the Sacramento area adds $4.35 per sqft; removal, baseboard and stairs are priced per room.
A collection is one spec (thickness, wear layer, width) in several colors. Mixing colors from one collection keeps the floor height and feel identical between rooms.

How an engineered board is built.
Engineered hardwood is a real wood floor built in layers: a sawn oak top you walk on, and a cross-layered core underneath that keeps the board flat. It looks and feels like solid hardwood, and it is the right wood floor for most Sacramento homes.
The top is solid oak, 2 to 4 mm thick on our boards; that is the layer you see, feel and can sand and refinish. Under it, layers of wood run in alternating directions, so the board barely moves when the house heats up in July or the slab breathes in winter. KONO Sonoma, Heritage and Grand use a multi-ply core; KONO Estate uses a three-layer European build with a click joint.
That stability is why engineered boards can be wide and long (up to 9-1/2 by 87 inches here), glued or floated over concrete, and installed in homes where solid wood would cup and gap. Installed by our crews, engineered hardwood starts at $9.34 per sqft in the Sacramento area.

Engineered hardwood questions, answered straight.
Is engineered hardwood real wood?
Yes. The surface is a layer of solid oak and the core is wood too. It is not a photo layer like laminate or vinyl.
Should I choose engineered or solid hardwood?
For homes on a concrete slab, in hot or changing climates, or with wide planks: engineered. Solid makes sense over a wood subfloor when you want the most refinishes over a lifetime.
How many times can engineered hardwood be refinished?
It depends on the wear layer: about 2 mm allows a light refinish, 3 to 4 mm allows full sand-and-finish cycles. Each color here lists its wear layer.
