Color groups are a guide: undertones shift with daylight and lamps, and one plank can sit in two groups. Pick up a free sample and look at it on your own floor.

European oak is a white oak: calm, tight grain that takes natural, pale and gray finishes evenly. Red oak is warmer, with a pink-tan cast and bold open grain that hides everyday wear. Both are hard, proven flooring woods.

The layer of real oak on top of the board. It sets how many times the floor can be sanded and refinished: about 2 mm allows a light refinish, 3 to 4 mm allows full ones. It is the difference between a floor you keep for decades and one you replace.

Materials per square foot. Installation by our crews in the Sacramento area adds $4.35 per sqft; removal, baseboard and stairs are priced per room.

A collection is one spec (thickness, wear layer, width) in several colors. Mixing colors from one collection keeps the floor height and feel identical between rooms.

Picking a gray that still looks like wood.

Gray oak floors go with white, black and modern kitchens. These finishes run from soft Heather Oak to deep Charcoal Red Oak.

The best gray floors keep the oak grain visible, so they read as wood, not as tile. Gray-brown tones like Driftwood Oak are warmer and blend with wood furniture; cool grays like Silver Red Oak suit white and black interiors.

On red oak, gray stain sinks into the open grain and gives a strong texture; on European oak it looks softer. Installed by our crews, gray hardwood starts at $9.34 per sqft in the Sacramento area.

Gray questions, answered straight.

Is gray hardwood still in style?

Flat, cold grays have faded; gray with visible grain and some warmth is still popular, especially in modern homes.

Does gray hardwood show dirt?

Mid grays hide dust and pet hair well. Very light or very dark grays show more.

Gray or natural?

Gray suits cool, modern rooms; natural suits warm and mixed ones. See natural wood floors.
