Test them harder than we would
Keys, standing water, dog claws, harsh light. If a floor is going to disappoint you, make it happen this week — not after 640 sqft of it is installed.
What to test at home.
This is the checklist our own estimators use. It takes one evening and settles arguments that renders never will.
Look at the board at noon by the window, then at night under your actual bulbs. Warm light shifts every tone — the pretty grey in the store can go beige in your hallway.
Click two boards together and leave a puddle across the joint — an hour for laminate, overnight for LVP. Wipe, then look for swell at the edge. That is the honest waterproof test.
Drag a house key across the face, medium pressure. We encourage it — that is what an AC5 or 20 mil surface is for, and better the sample than your new floor’s first week.
Lay the plank on your current floor and walk on it. Laminate walks stiffer and warmer; LVP denser and quieter. Feet decide this one, not eyes.
