How a floating laminate floor works.
Laminate boards lock to each other along all four edges and float over the subfloor. No glue, no nails, and a room can be done in a day.
The boards are connected to each other, not to the house, so the floor moves as one piece with the seasons. That is why it needs a small expansion gap at the walls, hidden by baseboard or quarter round, and a flat subfloor, within about 3/16 inch over 10 feet.
Floating also means a damaged board can be swapped out, and the floor can go over existing tile or sheet vinyl if they are flat and solid. Installed by our crews, click lock laminate starts at $5.35 per sqft in the Sacramento area.

Click lock (floating) questions, answered straight.
Is click lock laminate easy to install?
It is one of the easiest floors to DIY. Door jambs, stairs and the last row against a wall are the slow parts.
Can click lock laminate go over tile?
Usually, if the tile is flat and solid. Deep grout lines get a skim coat first.
Does floating laminate sound hollow?
Less with a good pad. KONO Harbor has a 2 mm pad attached for that reason.
